MacRitchie Reservoir

MacRitchie Reservoir boasts fame as Singapore’s oldest and biggest reservoir. It was completed in 1867 and was known as the Impounding Reservoir at that time. In 1907, the site was renamed as Thomson Road Reservoir. Finally, in 1922, it turned into MacRitchie Reservoir, as it is known to all Singaporeans nowadays.

In 1940, the reservoir was enlarged. As of today, the reservoir has 10 million cubic metres of water. It covers an area of 12 hectares and is a part of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve in Singapore. By the way, you can learn more about the history of this site right in the MacRitchie Reservoir Park – there is a historical plaque, which was unveiled in 1992 by the National Heritage Board (you can find it near the entrance of the park).

This site is more than just a reservoir. It is a real realm for all nature enthusiasts with lush greenery, a centuries-old forest, calm waters, and lots of inhabitants, including long-tailed macaque monkeys, lizards, squirrels, owls, flying lemurs, and many others. Besides, this place keeps a lot of history, so it is a must-visit for history geeks as well. Moreover, this park offers excellent opportunities for water sports lovers.
