7 reasons to choose an art camp
Cave paintings that date back at least 36,000 years suggest that art is as old as human society and predates language as a way of telling stories and expressing ideas and emotions. Even today, art can help us express ourselves in ways that language can’t match. As the old saying goes, ‘A picture paints a thousand words’.
But is art ‘useful’ beyond the enjoyment it can bring to the artist and their audience? In an ever-changing world in which our kids’ future jobs may not yet exist, some people believe that creativity may be the greatest transferable skill of them all. And art isn’t just useful for kids who want to become artists. Albert Einstein once said ‘the greatest scientists are artists as well.’ We don’t need to look any further than Leonardo da Vinci for evidence of this. One reason why art is important for science (and other fields such as business) is that we have to be able to conceptualize, visualize or imagine things to create them.
So, if you are considering the types of camps for kids that might be suitable for your child, it’s worth considering art camps, even for kids who don’t consider themselves ‘arty’. Art is being increasingly valued as an enrichment activity and there are a number of art camps for kids in Singapore that offer opportunities for kids of all ages. Art camp activities can include drawing, painting, sculpture, tessellation, posters, portraits, collage, resin work, papier-mâché, graphite, clay modelling, and colourful sand work. Good art camps will offer kids the opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of techniques.
With so many different types of holiday camp for your child available, it can be hard to choose the right fit for your child. So, to help you, here are just some of the reasons we think you should consider an art and design summer camp this holiday:
1. They can maximize your child’s creative potential
Art camps give kids the confidence to experiment and generate new ideas, which helps turn them into ‘thinkers’. As kids learn to express themselves using new techniques, they can take their creativity to a new level. And as they use their imagination and creativity, they will be developing key talents that will be useful in all walks of life.
2. They help develop well-rounded kids
Although we can’t all be polymaths like Leonardo da Vinci, it’s becoming increasingly accepted that well-rounded people have the best chance of success in life. Most fields of work are interlinked in some way, and art can be useful to conceptualise and communicate ideas to others. Art can also give kids a joy and appreciation that will be with them throughout life.
3. Kids learn important life skills
Art helps increase dexterity and coordination and, as kids try the various techniques of art, they will enhance the fine motor skills that are important for their development. But art camps can also help develop important life skills such as empathy, concentration, social skills, teamwork, objectivity, and critical evaluation.
4. They are highly popular with kids
Kids love art camps because they can have fun, socialise, make new friends, and make their own choices about what and how they create. They enjoy the satisfaction of making things that they can take home to show their families.
5. They involve screen-free fun
With kids spending so much time on screen-based activities, either at school or at home, art camps offer a rare opportunity for them to rest their eye muscles and get involved in hands-on activities.
6. They boost confidence and self-esteem
Art camps offer opportunities for kids to challenge themselves, take risks, and learn that other people’s evaluation of their work is subjective. If they enjoy their art and it pleases them, that’s the most important thing!
7. They enhance problem-solving abilities
Art activities can stimulate all of the senses, and make children’s brain synapses fire away as they experiment and create. Art offers endless opportunities for making choices, coming to conclusions, second-guessing decisions, and evaluating results.
Whatever your requirements, we always advise choosing an art camp that is run by a qualified teacher with extensive experience. Another thing to consider is the ratio of students to teachers – if this ratio is too high the students will probably not reap the greatest benefit from the classes.
And remember, as the American sociologist Charles Colley once said, ‘An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.
